You and your students are cordially invited to the 23rd annual San Diego Latino Film Festival’s FREE ¡Tu Cine! Student Outreach Screenings happening MARCH 15th-18th. This year we are excited to announce two very special locations that will host the ¡Tu Cine! screenings. The screenings will take place at the AMC Fashion Valley 18 in the Fashion Valley Mall AND at the Media Arts Center San Diego’s very own, Digital Gym Cinema in North Park. The screenings are curated for middle school and high school students and go from 10am to 12pm.

On the registration page you can select the day, the grade level, and how many students, teachers, and chaperones will be attending. You’ll receive a confirmation email and will be contacted once the films have been chosen. To stimulate discussion in the classroom we will provide a lesson plan with critical thought questions and commentary on the films attended. Sign up today, space is limited!

Middle School Films:
Tuesday 3/15: A Father’s Journey: A Father’s Journey explores the complicated relationship between a father and his son. A tragic accident sends the father on an unplanned journey in search of faith and healing. This is a father/son story about love family, and paying it forward. (Q&A session after the film with the lead actor and director of the film, David Fernandez Jr.) [This film will screen at AMC Fashion Valley 18]
Wednesday 3/16: The Little Prince: Animated; A little girl lives in a very grown-up world with her mother who tries to make sure she’s prepared for it. Her neighbor, The Aviator, introduces the girl to an extraordinary world where anything is possible, the world of The Little Prince. [This film will screen at AMC Fashion Valley 18]
Thursday 3/17: Youth Visions Showcase: The Media Arts Center San Diego presents a collection of youth produced films from young filmmakers. The filmmakers represent a growing population of young people who have found that their medium of expression lies in telling stories through film. This handpicked selection of short films include feature both fictional and non-fiction pieces, they were produced by filmmakers of varying experience levels and address topics that range from community activism, youth gambling, the implications of having a criminal record when looking for a job, social media’s influence on identity, cross border relations, and more! [This film will screen at AMC Fashion Valley 18]
Thursday 3/17: Latino Americans “Pride and Prejudice” & Homegirls (doc short): Documentary; This unique screening will pair two documentaries that provide insight into latino history and challenges facing latinos today. Pride and Prejudice details the creation of the proud “Chicano” identity, as labor leaders organize farm workers in California, and as activists push for better education opportunities for Latinos, the inclusion of Latino studies, and empowerment in the political process. Homegirls is a short documentary that follows Maria and Joselyn, two participants of Homeboy Industries’ 18-month job-training program for recovering drug addicts and ex-gang members, as they attempt to leave the past behind and start anew. [This film will screen at the Digital Gym Cinema in North Park]

Friday 3/18: La Formula del Dr. Funes: Narrative; Through his telescope, Martin Poyo witnesses Dr. Funes’ discovery of a formula that will turn adults into young people. Hoping to be turned into a twelve-year old, Dr. Funes tests the formula then falls into the hands of Funes’ archenemy, Dr. Moebius. Based on Francisco Honojosa’s bestselling children’s book, “Dr. Funes’ Formula” is a delightful throwback to those family-friendly G-rated movies that we are excited to feature. [This film will screen at the Digital Gym Cinema in North Park]
High School Films:
Tuesday 3/15: Alumbrones: Documentary; Life in Cuba, as seen through the eyes of twelve engaging and charismatic artists. “We don’t have internet…” As a result, “When you see a painting from Cuba, you know it’s from Cuba.” From the troubled period following the collapse of the Soviet Union, to the uncertain future as it faces today, this beautifully shot film captures a country at a time of significant transformation. [This film will screen at AMC Fashion Valley 18]
Tuesday 3/15: East LA Interchange: Documentary; East LA Interchange follows the evolution of working-class, immigrant Boyle Heights and how one neighborhood managed to survive the construction of the largest and busiest freeway interchange in the nation. The film explores the shifting face of community in the United States today and argues why it should matter to us all. [This film will screen at the Digital Gym Cinema in North Park]
Wednesday 3/16: No Mas Bebes: Documentary; They came to have their babies. They went home sterilized. The story of immigrant mothers who sued county doctors, the state, and the U.S. government after they were pushed into sterilizations while giving birth at the Los Angeles County – USC Media Center during the 1960’s and 70’s. Led by intrepid, 26 year old Chicana lawyer and armed with hospital records secretly gathered by a whistle blowing youth doctor, the mothers faced public exposure and stood up to powerful institutions in the name of justice. (Q&A session after the film with youth filmmakers) [This film will screen at AMC Fashion Valley 18]
Wednesday 3/16: Club Frontera: Documentary; Club Frontera is a riveting documentary about the Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles (Xolos) professional Mexican Soccer team and their positive impact of the city of Tijuana, Mexico. The compelling film follows players, fans, political figures, sports personalities, and enthusiasts from both sides of the border as they share their personal stories of how the newly emerging success of the Xolos is changing Tijuana for the better. [This film will screen at the Digital Gym Cinema in North Park]

Friday 3/18: Indivisible: Documentary; Indivisible is a feature length documentary about the real people at the heart of our nation’s immigration debate. Renata, Evelyn, and Antonio were young children when their parents brought them to the U.S. in search of a better life; they were teenagers when their mothers, fathers, and siblings were deported. Today, they are known as Dreamers. [This film will screen at AMC Fashion Valley 18]
